WTF- Reflections on 2020 Thus Far

The year 2020 has me in a perpetual state of bewilderment.  What is real, what is right— I haven’t had words or emotions.  It’s like I’m watching an apocalyptic film.  It’s taken me a while to digest, but this I know— my heart is broken for America.  I feel for the people who are tired of seeing their brothers and sisters murdered.  George Floyd was the tipping point for many and his death has sparked a revolution.  Floyd’s death has stolen the spotlight from COVID-19.  I watch in amazement as the attention of the nation shifts like a wave crashing and rescinding on the surf.  One minute it’s black lives matter.  The next it’s rioters and looters, and then we’re back to the hundreds of thousands of deaths Corona has caused.  I feel guilty for taking solace in the fact that for once, I am not the crazy one.

I am not the one currently breaking down, but I am familiar with rebuilding after ‘scorch the earth’ mentality has taken place.  My hope is that Americans learn that their voices are relevant and are meant to be heard.  I hope Americans begin voting and paying attention to who their elected officials are.  I hope Americans better understand compassion— that a person’s past isn’t what’s relevant— but their life and the freedom to live it here in the present moment is.

I am all too familiar with the notion that everything you believe and know to be true in life can change in an instant.  I hope that we can take the positive energy— the energy of uniting for a cause that is right— the energy of those who show up to work everyday even though their lives are at risk— that is the energy I choose to carry with me today and every day.
